So you want to bring your dog?
Personally, I LOVE animals
, and photographing them is always such a joy! Pets are just as much a part of the family as anybody and I love when clients want to bring their furry friends along for our session. However, there are a few things to consider when deciding when to include your pet, and a few more to keep in mind if you do bring them along.
Consider:
- Does my pet do well with strangers?
Unless your pet is really familiar with your photographer, it's important to consider the temperament of your dog. Is your dog friendly with strangers? Are they relaxed in public or very nervous? Even if your pet isn't super comfortable with strangers, that's not necessarily a deal-breaker. Consider working with your photographer to build in some "getting to know you" time for your pup. Include their favorite treat or toy, and allow them to get used to each other before the camera ever comes out. Ultimately, you know your dog best, so you know what their limits are.
2. Will including my pet stress me out?
For some people, their pet is a source of calm and serenity, but for others, it can be a little overwhelming to try to manage your dog's behavior (and more importantly, safety!) while also trying to appear relaxed and confident in your photos. It's a tall order, so don't feel bad if it feels like too much for your first photo session. My best advice is to bring a trusted friend or relative who can entertain your dog during parts of your session. It will help you feel more relaxed knowing they're in safe hands while you can pay attention to some other photos!
3. Is the session location pet-friendly?
This is something to keep in mind if you're planning to use a private space for your photos. Many museums and arboretums are not pet-friendly so it may not be practical, or even possible, to include your dog in your photos. Generally, public outdoor spaces are a safe bet for dogs, but it's important to pick a location that will meet your pets' needs, and set the scene for the photos you want.
Once you decide to bring your dog along...
I have a few tips and tricks that will help make the photo process a little smoother!
- Bring on the treats!
Most dogs are pretty motivated by a good treat, and having some treats that are "special" or rarer can help ensure your pup's cooperation. Make sure to have a baggie set aside that you can easily pass off to your photographer so they can tempt your pet to look at the camera.
2. Bring a blanket!
It's likely that some of your best shots will involve getting down to your dog's level, either by sitting or playing. If you plan to wear a more formal outfit, a shorter skirt/dress, or light-colored pants it may be wise to bring a neutral-colored blanket or sheet to sit on if your photographer doesn't provide one. Do avoid bringing blankets/towels with bright colors or patterns, or be prepared to get a little grassy or dusty as a part of the pictures.
3. Have realistic expectations!
No matter how good your photographer, or how well-behaved your pet is, sometimes not every picture works out. Pets are notorious for doing their own thing in photos, even when you have treats and toys to help keep them engaged. Just remember that this can be a little overwhelming for your pet and give them the space they need to calm down and have fun with the session too. Not every picture will be perfectly posed, but more often than not they turn out better because your pet is just being themselves.
I hope you found something useful in this little blog post and you have fun including your furry friend in your next portrait session!
